Career Switching
Switching careers into tech: a realistic plan
6 min read · Updated 1 October 2026
Career switchers succeed when they choose a specific target, build evidence and apply with a story that connects their past to the new role.
A plan
- Choose one target role (e.g. data analyst, QA engineer, support engineer, product designer) rather than “tech”.
- Read 20 current listings and note the skills that repeat — the skill analyzer does this for you.
- List transferable strengths: domain knowledge, communication, project management, customer insight.
- Build two or three small, finished projects that use the repeated skills, and write about what you learned.
- Apply to adjacent roles first (support engineering → engineering, analyst → data science) where your background is an asset.
Your story
Write a two-sentence narrative: where you’re from, what you’ve built since, and why this role. Put it in your resume summary and use it in interviews.
