Spotting job scams
4 min read · Updated 1 October 2026
Scams exploit eagerness to land remote work. A few rules prevent most losses.
Rules of thumb
- You should never pay to receive a job — not for equipment, training, “background checks” or registration.
- Be suspicious of interviews held entirely over messaging apps, and of offers made with no real interview.
- Verify the recruiter’s email domain matches the company’s official site, and look for the role on the company’s own careers page.
- Never share bank details, ID documents or one-time codes before a verified contract.
- Cheques you’re asked to deposit and then forward are a classic fraud.
If something feels wrong
Stop responding, don’t send money, and report the listing. Every Remotavia job page has a “Report this job” link that goes to our moderators.
