Interviews
The STAR method for behavioural interviews
4 min read · Updated 1 October 2026
Behavioural questions (“Tell me about a time when…”) are asking for evidence. STAR keeps you focused.
The four parts
- Situation — one or two sentences of context.
- Task — what you were responsible for.
- Action — what you did, in the first person. This is the longest part.
- Result — what happened, ideally with numbers, plus what you learned.
Preparing
- Pick 5–6 stories that can flex across questions: a conflict, a failure, a deadline, a decision with little data, leading without authority, learning something fast.
- Write each as STAR bullets (the interview-prep tool has a builder) and practise saying them aloud in under two minutes.
- For remote roles, prepare examples of asynchronous communication and working across timezones.
