About the role

About Us_
// At Masabi, we’re driving the fare payment revolution, powering the journeys of millions all over the world. We build fare collection platforms that allow riders to seamlessly buy and present tickets for public transport either on their mobile phones, from a ticket machine, or even by tapping their bank card to travel.

Our Justride platform is used in over 250 locations globally, including some of the largest cities in the world. With our industry-first mobile ticketing SDK, we’ve partnered with large players in the transport space, including Uber, Moovit and Transit.

Your own journey is important to us too. Choosing a role here means joining a network of innovators from all walks of life; a group of passionate individuals who consistently deliver. Here, you’ll find the tools you need to build the career you want. Whether you’re taking the direct route or trying a new path, we’ll support you no matter what.

The Role_

// At Masabi, we're powering the journeys of millions by making public transport payments simple, accessible, and seamless.

We're looking for Systems Engineers to connect our Justride platform to the physical world: the validators, faregates, fareboxes, point of sale terminals and onboard vehicle systems that riders and operators use every day. You'll work across the device-to-cloud boundary, from SDKs running on fare collection equipment and our Android point of sale app to the cloud services that configure and monitor them.

As part of a cross-functional team, you'll work closely with engineers, testers and product partners to take features from idea to production. What you build is what riders tap, scan and rely on every day.

Location_

// This is a fully remote contract role for people based in India, working a shifted pattern to align with UK working hours as much as possible

Responsibilities_

  • Integrate and maintain Justride SDKs on embedded and hardware-enabled devices, including fare media validation, NFC and contactless EMV tap handling, and barcode payloads

  • Build and maintain features in our Android point of sale app, including integration with card readers, NFC readers and printers

  • Build and maintain on-device services and integration proxies that connect to onboard vehicle systems such as GPS and AVL

  • Contribute to cloud services that support devices, such as remote configuration and software updates

  • Write clean, well-tested code and contribute to code reviews, CI pipelines, infrastructure as code, monitoring and releases for the components you work on

  • Troubleshoot issues across devices and the cloud using logs, metrics and lab hardware

  • Take part in feature refinement and technical discussions, and help shape solutions

  • Take ownership of your work and support team outcomes

About You_

  • Clear, confident communication in written and spoken English

  • 2 or more years of commercial software engineering experience

  • Solid programming skills in at least one language, and happy to pick up others

  • Comfortable working across the stack, from cloud services down to device-level concerns

  • Experience building or running services on AWS or another major cloud platform

  • A solid grounding in testing (unit, integration and contract tests), Git workflows, CI/CD and Docker

  • Able to work through ambiguous problems and ask for help when needed

  • Collaborative and team-oriented, happy to share knowledge and learn from others

Nice to Have_

  • Experience with Java/Kotlin, Go or C

  • Android development experience

  • Embedded Linux experience (Yocto, systemd, cross-compilation)

  • Familiarity with NFC, smartcards or EMV contactless

  • Experience with Terraform/Terragrunt, gRPC and Protobuf

  • Experience in security-sensitive environments (PCI, key management) or with hardware-in-the-loop testing

  • Knowledge of transit, ticketing or IoT device fleets

We don't expect you to tick every box. What matters most is curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the motivation to take ownership of your work.

What You'll Learn_

  • How a global fare payment platform works end to end, from the cloud to the devices riders tap

  • Hands-on experience with contactless payments, embedded devices and cloud services at scale

  • How to deliver in a cross-functional, international team where engineers help shape the technical direction

Our Stack_

  • Java/Kotlin, Go, C

  • Android

  • Embedded Linux

  • AWS

  • GitLab CI/CD, Docker

  • Terraform/Terragrunt

  • gRPC, Protobuf

  • Grafana
