About the Role

We are looking for an experienced API Gateway Architect to lead an organization-wide migration from Apigee to AWS API Gateway. The role involves designing target-state architecture, establishing API governance standards, and building scalable, secure, and reusable API platform solutions. The candidate will also lead efforts to establish AWS-native alternatives for Apigee capabilities such as analytics, reporting, and developer portal functionality.

Job Description

The architect will assess the existing Apigee environment across multiple teams and services, identify feature gaps, and define the migration strategy to AWS API Gateway. This includes designing standardized API architecture, security patterns, observability frameworks, and reusable infrastructure components.

The role also focuses on developing centralized logging, monitoring, analytics, and reporting solutions to ensure visibility into API traffic, performance, errors, and consumer usage. The candidate will work closely with engineering, security, infrastructure, and platform teams to establish governance standards and ensure a smooth, phased migration with appropriate rollback strategies.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess the existing Apigee environment, including routing, rate limiting, quotas, security policies, and shared gateway capabilities.
• Conduct feature-parity and gap analysis between Apigee and AWS API Gateway.
• Define enterprise-wide AWS API Gateway reference architecture and implementation standards.
• Design API security solutions covering OAuth2/OIDC, JWT validation, mTLS, API keys, and WAF.
• Establish centralized logging, monitoring, metrics, distributed tracing, and reporting architectures.
• Develop reusable Infrastructure as Code modules using Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation.
• Define API governance standards covering security, versioning, tagging, and cost management.
• Own migration planning, phased cutovers, canary/blue-green deployments, and rollback strategies.
• Provide architectural guidance and collaborate with engineering teams throughout the migration.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate should have 7–11 years of experience in API architecture and enterprise API platform management, with strong production experience in Apigee Edge and AWS API Gateway. They should have demonstrated experience leading large-scale API migrations, defining architectural standards, implementing security and observability frameworks, and enabling multiple engineering teams.
