About the role
The Vice President & Chief APD Actuary serves as the Asset Protection Division’s senior actuarial and risk executive. Reporting to the Division President, this leader provides independent actuarial oversight and shapes pricing, underwriting, portfolio, and risk decisions to support disciplined growth and strong financial performance. The role leads the actuarial function, partners across the business, and ensures the integrity of actuarial opinions, reserve analyses, and regulatory reporting.
Responsibilities
· Provide independent actuarial and risk oversight for APD’s asset protection products, including VSC, GAP, and ancillary offerings; establish credibility as APD’s independent actuarial voice; and preserve professional skepticism while escalating material concerns.
· Oversee pricing strategy and performance across APD lines; challenge models, assumptions, methodologies, and data quality; strengthen pricing, reserve, model, and risk governance; and recommend actions that support profitability, disciplined margins, financial objectives, and APD’s risk appetite.
· Partner with Product, Underwriting, Finance, Commercial, Claims, and Operations on risk selection, guidelines, new products, program governance, portfolio trends, loss drivers, pricing implications, and mitigations that balance growth, capital efficiency, and risk.
· Monitor in-force performance through dashboards and risk indicators, including loss ratios, emergence patterns, frequency and severity trends, and other experience metrics; recommend actions to improve outcomes or rebalance risk.
· Lead actuarial support for reinsurance strategy, evaluating structures, pricing, economic value, capital impact, retention limits, counterparty exposure, performance, and emerging risks to protect earnings and balance-sheet resilience.
· Lead reserve adequacy assessments and support capital, solvency, financial planning, stress testing, and M&A analyses with Finance and Enterprise Risk.
· Own P&C actuarial and regulatory reporting, including reserve analyses, actuarial opinions, and supporting memoranda; monitor relevant developments and ensure timely, accurate, compliant, decision-useful reporting.
· Engage Pricing Committees, the CFO, the Chief Risk Officer, and other senior stakeholders through timely, decision-useful portfolio insights, clear performance reporting, actionable recommendations, and effective enterprise partnerships.
· Build and lead an accountable, high-performing actuarial organization with strong capabilities, clear decision rights, technical standards, disciplined analysis, constructive challenge, continuous improvement, integrity, and succession depth.
Leadership Capabilities
· Applies deep P&C or specialty insurance expertise across pricing, reserving, reinsurance, in-force performance, loss drivers, and portfolio risk.
· Uses strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills to translate complex actuarial analysis into clear, actionable insights and disciplined decisions.
· Communicates actuarial judgments, uncertainty, and recommendations credibly to executives, governance committees, boards, auditors, regulators, and technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
· Builds trusted, action-oriented partnerships across functions while constructively challenging assumptions and maintaining actuarial independence.
· Develops accountable, high-performing teams and creates alignment through clear communication, effective change leadership, and disciplined execution.
· Brings an enterprise and customer perspective and leads with curiosity, adaptability, resilience, courage, authenticity, and professional integrity.
Requirements
· A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible actuarial experience in P&C, specialty, or asset protection insurance, including senior actuarial team leadership and experience across pricing, reserving, risk management, financial reporting, regulatory engagement, and executive decision support.
· Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS) required; Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) preferred.
· Experience with extended warranty, service contract, GAP, or similar protection products preferred.
· Reinsurance and loss portfolio monitoring experience strongly valued.
